The metaverse is the word on everyone’s lips right now, but what exactly is it, how will it work, and is it a good thing?

I was fortunate enough to have a chat with Jennifer Dudley-Nicholson, the national technology editor from The Courier Mail, about everything there is to know about Mark Zuckerberg’s polarising metaverse.

Have you ever wanted to actually be inside the internet? Well, if Meta (formely Facebook) CEO Mark Zuckerberg has his way, that’s almost where the internet is heading … kind of.

In Zuckerberg’s own words, the metaverse will be “… even more immersive — an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it.”

But is a world where humans spend the majority of their lives with a virtual reality headset on their heads a world that we really want?

When chatting with Jennifer, I had a few thoughts that seemed to really stick out.

“The idea of the metaverse is interesting and there are a lot of very cool things that will come out of it,” I said, clearly being somewhat hesitant about the potential of what the metaverse may have to offer.

However, while I certainly think the idea of the metaverse is interesting, I am equally aware of what the downsides may be to such a life-changing technology.

“We’re only just scratching the surface by working from home and beaming in by Zoom. We know technology is going to change how we do things. I just worry we are going to lose that human touch. Humans are capable of doing so much more than sitting in a dark room.”

How do you feel about the metaverse? Are you for it? Are you against it? Do you have absolutely no idea what it is? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

If you haven’t had a chance to read Jennifer’s full article, you can read it all right here.
