Facebook Loses Daily Active Users

13 March 2022 9:54 pm

Facebook may still be the world’s biggest social media platform, but with so much more competition online nowadays, it isn’t all smooth sailing.

I was fortunate enough to appear on ABC News to share my thoughts, opinions, and predictions about Meta, Facebook, and what this drop in users means for the social media giant’s future.

To say it hasn’t been a great couple of days for Facebook’s parent company, Meta, would be a massive understatement. In fact, it would be a $230 billion understatement. Can we all take a moment to spare a thought for the company that now only has a $660 billion market cap?

For the first time in its history, Facebook reported a drop in users. In the last three months of 2021, Facebook lost close to 500,000 daily active users.

It is hard to talk about why people are leaving Facebook without mentioning the social media elephant in the room. I speak, of course, about the sensation that is TikTok. Hugely popular with Gen Z, TikTok continues to grow, capturing the creativity of its dedicated user base.

Even Zuckerberg himself is seemingly worried about the platform’s growth, “TikTok is so big a competitor already and also continues to grow at quite a fast rate,” Zuckerberg said.

The social media giant also shifted some of the blame onto Apple’s privacy changes, which have made it harder for the platform to target users with personalised ads.

With Meta shifting much of its focus to the metaverse, VR, and AR, who knows what this recent fall off in users means for Facebook.
