From Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Snapchat to iMessage, and so many more, there’s certainly no shortage of instant messaging apps in the world, but has the rise of instant message and DM been for the greater good?
In the 80s and 90s, when instant messaging was starting to take off, it was all about bringing people closer together. Nowadays, however, instant messaging apps have changed the way we communicate and blurred the lines between genuine communication and its illusion.
Instant messaging apps haven’t just changed how we interact and communicate with the people in our lives. They have also changed how we communicate with brands, often whether we like it or not. Yes, where instant messaging was once about exchanging ideas and making the world a better place, it’s now taken on a second life as a powerful (and sometimes invasive) marketing tool. Oh, and don’t forget the seemingly endless onslaught of spam messages.
