Twitter Blue has just been rolled out on Australia and Canada, allowing users to pay a subscription fee for premium features and exclusive content. Will it take off?

I joined Mark Gibbson on 6PR to have a chat about everything happening in the world of social media this week.

We started off by taking a look at some huge news from one of the world’s biggest social media giants. If you haven’t seen or heard already, Twitter has just launched its first subscription-based product, Twitter Blue.

What is Twitter Blue? Well, essentially, Twitter Blue will allow users to pay a subscription fee in order to access premium content and features. If you’ve been dreaming of an undo Tweet feature for some time now, Twitter Blue is the answer to your prayers.

While Twitter Blue is only available in Australia and Canada, as the platform tests the new feature, it will certainly be interesting to see if people will be willing to pay for service that has been free for so long. Personally, I can’t wait to sign up and start exploring all of the new features.

As to whether other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram will follow Twitter’s lead, we will just have to wait and see.

Moving on from Twitter Blue, Gibbo and I spent some time chatting about Instagram backflipping on its decision to hide likes from users. If you’ve been active on Instagram at all, you’ve probably notice that you can’t see the number of likes on posts from people you follow, only on your own posts.

Instagram made the decision to hide the likes count from users because of issues surrounding mental health. Now, however, Instagram has announce that it will let users decide whether or not they want to show their like count and on which specific posts they would like to show them.

It will be interesting to see how users react to this decision. Personally, I like the hidden like feature, so we shall have to wait and see if users revert to the ways of old.
