Personal data collection ads • 3AW Drive with Tom Elliott

Personal data is collected on social media. We all know it. Apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are collecting our personal information. But what is that data being used for?
But how much of that personal data is being used, and how much of that information is being collected and stored in foreign countries?
I joined 3AW Drive with Tom Elliott to have a chat about a new plan for some hard-hitting TV ad campaigns that would warn Aussies about the foreign-owned social media apps collecting personal data.
It is interesting to note how these issues of personal data collection have only recently been put under the microscope more than ever before. I’m sure that has absolutely nothing to do with the meteoric rise to popularity of one Chinese-owned video sharing platform *cough* TikTok.
Is the collection of personal information something that actually concerns the general public, or are these concerns more politically motivated?
While some may excuse these kind of TV commercials as a necessary evil required to educate and inform the public about personal data collection, I have to say that they seem to be little more than fear mongering.
As I previously mentioned, if you’re using social media (regardless of the platform) they already have more than enough personal data about you. In most cases, you actually have to handover your personal details to even sign up to an app.
It is not the collection of personal data that social media users should be concerned with. We should be more concerned with what this information is being used for. Is our information being on-sold for marketing purposes, or is it something even more sinister? Only time will tell, but it’s something that’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Rather than scare the public into fearing social media, we should be educating people and focussing on improving levels of social media literacy across the board. Social media and personal data collection isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so we should be doing all we can to learn and understand as much about it as possible.
