David Attenborough is no longer active on Instagram and the Solomon Islands looks set to ban Facebook. It’s been an absolutely huge week in the world of social media.
Tony and I had a quick look back on this year’s State of Social conference. It was the first time the conference was held over two days. While the conference certainly had its challenges in the age of COVID-19, it was a resounding success, and I can’t wait to do it all again in 2021.
We had a quick chat about Parler, an American microblogging and social media site that has built a large following with supporters of Donald Trump, conservatives, conspiracy theorists, and right-wing extremists. It’s an interesting and potentially dangerous online space that’s well worth keeping an eye on into the future.
After smashing all sorts of records on Instagram and reaching 6.2 million followers, it looks like David Attenborough and his team are pulling the pin on Instagram. While Attenborough’s account is still live on Instagram, his bio now features the message, “Account is no longer active”.
Will Attenborough return to Instagram in the future? Well, only time will tell, but the door is certainly open and the world’s would definitely be better off with Attenborough sharing his expertise with the world.
It almost feels as if Attenborough’s venture into Instagram was simply to promote his newest project. In my opinion, his departure seems like an odd business move from his team.
In another big blow and for Facebook, it looks like the Solomon Islands are set to ban Facebook in the name of national unity. The move comes after the Solomon Islands Government placed a temporary ban on Facebook in an effort to tackle cyberbullying and online defamation.
